Fuck It.

Its far to fucking long ago to remember details - they'll come out when I'm not trying to recall them.

My holiday was in three parts:

Sonar Festival - Not as fun as last year, met some cool lads and a nice group of italians and drank too much.

Ibiza - Chilled out for two days, went to Il Divino which was shit, went to Space which is amazing, met a very lovely girl, got free booze, fell in love with Ibiza.

Barcelona - Lovely, did nothing except relax and talk to nice people from all over the world and sit in a hammock and talk and drink and eat and smoke, best part of my trip.

Post Sonar

I intended to have a quiet Sunday night, I wandered down to the beach, grabbed some food then rang Steve and arranged to meet for a farewell drink, this turned into a "go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on come and see Andy Weatherall" session until I succumbed to peer presure. Andy Weatherall was ace, even if he does look like a fifties throwback. What wasn't so ace was drinking far too much, sleeping for two hours before having to check out of the hotel room, being so hungover that I couldn't talk to the pretty Japanese girl that was trying to engage me in conversation or needing two hours to walk 100 yards from the hostel to the aeroport bus stop or nearly fainting on the bus. Sleeping on the terminal floor was good.

Got to Ibiza, with the intention of grabbing some sleep and then heading to Amnesia for the opening night of Cocoon - instead I grabbed some sleep and woke up the next day with a cold.

Fuck Ibiza is hot and bright.

Sonar By Night Saturday

Radioslave, Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills, ACE!

Sonar Day 3

Even though I am loathe to admit it the music at this years Sonar by Day festival was far inferior to last year's - The final day part featured Mira Calix who was OK but you can only listen to strange noises for so long, Haswell and Hecker - not good at all just very very very loud tones and one strobe light out of thick fog and then more of the same from other people I couldn't be bothered to sit watching.

The only real highlight - Miles very cool DJ played a wide wide selection of music, should have been outside in the Sonar Village.

Sonar Day 2

Weird day, weirder night. Possibly the only bad day of the holiday.

Raum Playa Festival

Er...

It's too long ago trying to remember what I did....

...Beer? Dancing?....

Actually it's coming back bit by bit...I met some very cool Parisians...then I met some very very odd Bretons who were trying to pretend that they were Irish, I pointed out that my Irish granmother didn't sound like they did...they insisted on buying me beer...a bit later some brummie bloke came up to me and knew my name and said that he had met me at Dan's house, I didn't know who he was, he complained that they had three stages all playing the same stuff...

...I've seen some bad reviews of this thing - my only complaint was that they ran out of water - I enjoyed the music and the location was pretty excellent.

On the way home I got chatting to a group of Italians...

Sonar By Day - Thursday

After a fairly lazy morning, I grabbed some food and laughed at people who hadn't collected their tickets and were were waiting in an enormous queue.

I got told off for going the wrong way around a boring exhibition. Then I got told off for drinking a beer in the wrong place.

I bumped into Ed, he looked very hungover and in no mood to talk.

I watched:

  • Littleprettyautomatique
  • Mica and the Cluster
  • James Holden
  • Black Galaxy

James Holden was very very good, its wierd dancing so early in the afternoon.

This year you couldn't take your own alcohol inside the venue and I was more than a little pissed off at paying six euros for a crappy pint of Budweiser, I decided to grab some food and go to a bar to watch a little cricket and then head back to the festival to see some more stuff, I never made it back...

    People From Harrogate.

I can't remember what I did in the day, I suspect it wasn't a great deal. In the evening I walked to the Arc de Triomf and around Parc Cuitidella and then went for a couple of beers. I got chatting to a very nice couple from Harrogate, they said that one of the mates would love me and would I be interested in going on a blind date, the only problem was that I would have to go to Yorkshire to meet her.

    Drassanes, Manchester Bar and Moog

After doing the obligatory walk down the Ramblas I found myself outside the Barcelona Maratime Museum. Figuring that I should at least make a small effort to do a bit of culture I decided to go in. It was OK inside, they give you a handheld computer thing that had loads of info about Spanish Maritime history, some of interesting. I actually spent more time reading in the shade of the cafe with a strong coffee than I did in the actual museum.

Barcelona is a city where you just seem to walk and walk and walk and walk....I pretty much walked the length of the city, twice. I had a walk around Park Guell but found it too busy and decided to head back to the hostel to freshen up.

The Centric Point Hostel has it's own bar, where I got chatting to an girl from Washington DC she was heading to a wedding in Switzerland and had decided to spend a few days in Barcelona beforehand. She was a little odd and I think I might have been a bit rude to her because I hadn't eaten anything all day and left to fill my stomach mid-conversation, I was starving. Strangely she didn't speak to me again. Ah well.

It's a bit wierd going away on your own at first, I didn't really know what to do with myself, most of the people in the hostel seemed to be with a group of mates...I decided to go for a few beers and see what happened.

After a couple of pints and a lot of Pinxchos, I bar hopped for a little while and found myself in the Manchester Bar. There were two lads sitting at the bar ordering cocktails of what looked to me like ice and sugar and lime, I asked them what they were and then got chatting to them, they were Steve and Ed from Dorset and were in Barcelona for their sixth Sonar festival. After a few beers they said that they were going to move on and invited me to join them, we didn't get too far - about a hundred yards down the road for more beers.

After the bars shut around three Steve said the he fancied going clubbing and knew this cool little place that was packed every night of the week, Moog. When we arrived it was fairly empty, but half an hour later it was completely rammed and fucking sweaty. The music was an odd mix of minimal techno, live house and soul music performed by two wierd looking Scandinavians called Ost and Kjex dressed in bowler hats and very brightly coloured old fashioned suits, they were most entertaining.

I've no idea what time I left but I had to avoid a million and one whores, pickpockets and indian hawkers along the ramblas.

    Arrival in Barcelona

Ben's birthday, having too much beer on the Sunday, spending a day with no chance of finishing all of the work that I needed to do, a two hour delay at Birmingham Aeroport and not arriving at my the Centric Point Hostel till around 2 A.M. and then having to wait while the receptionist tried to work out how to work the computer meant that I just went straight to sleep as soon as I hit my pillow.
